Hey players, DJay here with another Dreamcast longplay on a challenging shmup, Border Down.

Description of the game:

Border Down is a horizontal scrolling bullet hell shmup by G.Rev released in arcades in April 2003 on the Sega Naomi hardware exclusively in Japan. A home port for the Sega Dreamcast was released in September 2003. The game itself is a spiritual successor of 1991 Metal Black due to its similar gameplay, as the ex-Taito members worked on the game and Yasuhisa Watanabe having composed the soundtracks for both games. The same team that have worked on this game were also involved in programming and background design for Ikaruga and Gradius V.

In an unknown future, humans began their first travel on Mars. Unfortunately, something had gone terribly wrong. A mysterious enemy force referred to as F.A. (First Approach), had become a hostile threat towards humanity. They're known to cause mass destruction in their wake and vanish afterwards. The organization of United Nations of Mars had established their first external space defense force, the SSDF (Solar System Defense Force). A solution to defeat F.A. was created: to develop a new remote control combat system named "RAIN" (Remote Artific Intelligence Network) and equip it in a new generation spacecraft named ANTARES XX Red Wasp. 3 of these ships are dispatched to eliminate the enemy forces and save the Solar System.

The gameplay is reminiscent to that of Metal Black. The only difference is, there are more than 2 methods of attacking enemies, an orb item to fill up the laser guage, earned either by commiting suicide or destroying a certain container and speed control. As the title suggests, there are 3 different borders varying in difficulty and amount of lives. If the player gets hit or collides with walls, a "border down" will occur and sends the player to a different border, though it decreases the ranking system, so managing suicides is key to avoid the risk of enemies becoming too aggressive at later stages. However, if the players dies in the Red Border, the game is over. The scoring system is also unique in that aside from destroying enemies, the amount of time taken to destroy the boss also affects how many points the player scores. The longer the time taken to destroy the boss, the better the player scores, but if too much is taken, the score will decrease. Destroying enemies too quickly will lessen the score. Within each stage, a Norm clear target score is displayed, showing how many points the player must achieve. Once the target score has being reached, the player will then be given the chance to choose any border to start off at the next stage. If not, the player must proceed at the same border that was currently set, whether the player had died or not. There are 4 final stages based on the player's performance throughout the first 5 stages, each with 4 different endings and different bosses. During final boss fights, players must destroy them before the timer hits zero. If the time expires, no ending is achieved and the game ends.

Destroy every last one of the F.A. and save Mars from destruction!
