Resident Evil 4 might possibly be in my humble opinion the best in the popular Capcom franchise or at the very least a significant highlight in the series which changed everything you thought you knew about Resident Evil. Ported to the Playstation 2 by Capcom and released in 2005, Resident Evil 4 seemingly has lost very little in this version and actually adds to it by incorporating some exclusive content especially for the PS2. Much like the previous games in the series had redefined and tweaked survival horror formula. This 4th foray into the evil knocks down the preverbial established foundations of what came before and rebuilds it into something far greater. Some of the main changes are that now the tank controls are gone, zombies are now villagers infected with a new type of virus Las Plagas, and the action is now played out via an over the shoulder perspective which works incredibly well. Also the game has much more of a heavy focus on all out fast paced action running and gunning with sequences and events being thrown at the player pretty often. Once again Leon Kennedy returns as the star of the game which picks up six years after the events of Resident Evil 2. Now a specially trained agent working for the president, He has been sent to rural Europe to try and rescue the president s daughter who has been kidnapped by an unknown group who have a new virus which now enslaves humans but also enhances their reflexes sending them into a giant rage. The first things you’ll notice is that Leons movements are smoother with a greater emphasis on freedom and of course a much more accurate aiming system. Areas are much larger with much more freedom and room to run around. Enemies come at the rookie cop pretty often and in greater numbers forcing you to forever be thinking on your feet and ensuring you adopt some strategies to overcome the legions of foes. You can run around and pump them all full of lead until they finally bite the bullet, shoot them off cliffs or even use the environment against them. Some areas even have explosive barrels which is another way of grabbing a few precious seconds to reload your weapons. Speaking fo weapons I should mention the key components of this epic game are the staggering amount of guns Leon can acquire and the ability to upgrade each one. You see, RE4 now introduces a smattering of RPG levelling up Whereby defeating enemies or searching areas earns Leon treasure ammo and or Pesetas which he can pick up. On almost every area of the game is a mysterious Merchant who will sell him guns and healing items etc. The more cash Leon has the more he can purchase. There is everything from magnums, Wild West revolvers, shotguns, rifles and automatic weapons. As significant progress is made The Merchant gradually starts to sell more weapons and offer upgrades from weapons that Leon currently has. What is cool about this feature, is that players can pick and choose which weapons they prefer and would suit them and the situation. Also some guns can be found in the game and can be taken to the merchant to be sold or again upgraded. Buying and finding stuff is also largely dependant on how much room leon has. RE4’s list of items is free of the inventory screen and now represent a carry case with each item taking up a number of spaces within it. Sometimes you’ll find or buy a weapon or item that you really want and if your case is packed with tns of stuff it wont fit right away. You may have to fiddle about and try and make it fit within the parameters of the case, I.e moving items around or discarding certain items to allow what you want in the case. Fear not though as once you get further through the game the Merchant will sell you larger cases meaning you’ll be able to carry more items.
