Freedom Planet: Sonic Soundtrax Edition (Part 2) - Relic Maze [Lilac]
An ambush! Lilac pursuits through the Relic Ruins to find...an old teammate as an enemy!
-
Welcome to Project 3K, a one-off playthrough of Freedom Planet featuring music taken from multiple Sonic The Hedgehog games. A series celebrating the point when I hit 3000 Subscribers.
I was very specific with my choices of music - I avoided things like fan remixes, chiptune (aside from the 1-Up) & different versions/acts of the same theme. I wanted to have different pairs of themes for each stage, even if they may not sound like themes you would normally put together.

Music Choices Explained:
- Shut Up Faker -
It's a stark contrast with the original track. Whereas "Here Comes Trouble!" is, well, troublsome sounding, the SA2 has more of an edge, which makes the character interactions with Serpantine & Spade much more rage-filled. It was a no-brainer to me, it just works that well.
- Main Menu (Mega Collection) -
This was a tough one. I thought about choosing between S&tBK's "Fan Art (It Doesn't Matter)" & Sonic R's "Back In Time (Instrumental)", but they either felt too soothing or too montage-like. I wanted something "homely" if that makes any sense. Eventually I tested out the menu theme from Mega Collection, & it just clicked. Like the cutscene music before, it's very different to the original Freedom Planet track, but I think the change in sound & style flows well.
- Tropical Jungle -
Relic Maze 1 had a particular bounce & rhythm to it (not sure if I’m describing right) that I don’t hear in Sonic songs that often. Plus the tropical/East-Asian vibe which combined makes for a unique track. The closest I got was ‘06’s “Tropical Jungle” - although more cheerful sounding, I think it gets the job done.
- Vs. Metal Sonic -
It’s energetic, sudden & bombastic. What more can I say? Shame the Chase Scenes are brief though.
- Rusty Ruins: Act 2 -
It was the first track I thought of. What’s interesting is that Relic Maze 2 goes for a Spy-flick vibe, Rusty Ruins is fittingly more adventurous/explorative.
- Un-Gravitify (Electro Extended) -
There was another contender, but at this point I’d forgotten what it was! The Electro Extended mix (or “Main Menu”) already sounds very extra, which works wonders for the technicolour bonus room.
