"Ghost in the Shell" directed by Rupert Sanders is a "high art" cyberpunk sci-fi action film that will definitely impress you. This is a film where I lean towards my audience brain rather than my critic one, because there are definitely some issues here but it's just too much fun to hate on.

"Major" (Scarlett Johansson) has been reincarnated in a synthetic body. The only human part of her left is her brain, but even that isn't 100% there since her memories have been tinkered with by her creators. Major is supposedly the first of her kind but this turns out to not be entirely true. Major must decide whether to side with her creators or her discarded kind.

Ghost in the Shell is a super stylish and vibrant movie. It features a fast pace, exciting world, and I was never once bored personally. Now I called this one "high art" but it's actually quite the popcorn flick too, so it has the best of both worlds here. I really enjoyed the action and how good the CGI and designs of everything looked and sounded.

Where the films slightly falters is first of all the fact that Scarlett Johansson is running around in a skin tight nude suit, and while I'm not normally one to virtue signal, this was pretty funny and obviously very noticeable so I wanted to address it. It made me take her character less seriously and it was clearly hyper sexualized as possible for advertising purposes. The other major (pun intended) issue is how long it takes for the real plot to actually begin. By the time we get the first villain's reveal and the truth is finally uncovered I felt like we were wrapping things up and that made me disappointed since it was just getting really interesting.

Ghost in the Shell is better than "Blade Runner" (1982) but not as good as "Alita: Battle Angel" (2019) in my opinion. But it features the best of both worlds and is a certified audience pleaser at least to me.
