Welcome to The Elder Scrolls: Arena. Released in 1994, this is the first game in The Elder Scrolls series, and it's amazingly impressive to see just how far these games have come and how much they have changed in almost 30 years.

This first game crammed a lot of old school playability (and grinding!) into a small package. At 77 MB, it is absolutely tiny by today's standards, but in 1994, was still a big amount of data.

Regardless of size, however, it was always a bigger deal - as it was the first truly open first-person cRPG of the era. It was truly sandbox open world, as the early vestiges of procedural generation were being explored, creating a setting that you can live in.

The only real issue with the game is that despite having a massive amount of content, the main storyline was quite simplistic, and the sometimes felt like there wasn't a lot of point to doing things off the beaten path. But for those who took the time to do so, there were wonders to behold and explore in the first world where the game didn't exactly hold your hand and force you to do anything.

For those who want to experience the joys of this game themselves, it is free over on GOG at https://www.gog.com/en/game/the_elder_scrolls_arena - it's powered by DOSbox, and comes with everything you need for what was truly a next-gen cRPG in 1994, pre-Diablo.
