QUAKE 4 review for Xbox 360

QUAKE 4 REVIEW FOR XBOX 360.
In this review (which took an ungodly amount of time to put together) I look at a rather peculiar beast indeed - and I don't mean the one in the thumbnail! Raven Software's conversion of Quake 4 for the Xbox 360 is the only console port of Id's direct follow up to Quake II.
Yes, the continuity gets weird here! With the preceding Quake III Arena specifically designed as a multiplayer title, this is Quake II's first proper sequel. It puts players in the combat boots of marine corporal Matthew Kane, part of a squad sent to attack the Strogg - the returning villains from Quake II - on their homeworld shortly after the events of the second game. Previous Quake games had appeared here and there on other platforms such as the Sony Playstation and Nintendo 64, and with the Quake brand being a fairly big deal, it seems strange that the game didn't receive a wider release across other formats. But does Quake 4 earn its place among the seventh console generation's massive library of first person shooters?
In 2005, Microsoft's at the time next-gen hardware was still fairly new, and developers were still working out the intricacies of bringing technically demanding games to them. So it was by no means guaranteed that a game like this, which had been keenly anticipated and well received on PC, would arrive on console looking and playing exactly as expected.
In it's own right, the game represents an interesting evolution of the formula Id created with the first Quake. There's action, exploration and - interestingly, considering it was never a strong feature of the series - a lot more focus on narrative. And quite possibly one of the most interesting plot twists in a shooter of its era. But can the Xbox 360 do all of this the justice it deserves? Or was it too ambitious a port for the system during its early days?
I unpack my rocket launcher, lightning gun and dark matter cannon and head deep into the heart of Strogg territory to pick the game apart. Oh - and, just to forestall any questions, yes, I really do own two Xbox 360 Elite models. There's a bit of a story there... one of them didn't cost me anything, so , y'know... why not? (Don't ask me how I ended up with three Playstation 3s and four Nintendo Wiis, though!)
