TITANFALL 2 review for Xbox One
HdE'S TOTALLY UNORIGINAL GAMING SHOW S03, E12
TITANFALL 2 REVIEW FOR XBOX ONE.
If in doubt... bring a giant robot! I round off season three of the Totally Unoriginal Gaming Show with a look at what could well be one of the best first person shooters I've ever played. And it comes as a bit of a surprise! At least, to me, anyway.
Respawn Entertainment's Titanfall 2, despite it's status as a sequel to the original Titanfall, is actually the first title in the franchise to feature a fully fleshed out single player offline campaign. Given the first game's focus on online play to the exclusion of anything else, it's safe to say that I didn't expect much of this follow up. Which sort of goes to show that you shouldn't really make assumptions.
Playing as pilot Jack Cooper, who inherits the gargantuan titan BT-7274, the game takes you on a wild and crazy journey into the heart of enemy territory on another world, with the fate of an entire planet in the balance, no less! You'll run, shoot, stomp, wall run and double jump through a wide variety of interesting environments, leaning on Jack's agility and BT's brawn and weapon systems to save the day. Which is kind of fun when you realise you can use the giant robot to stomp on things.
I've played a lot of first person action games, and reviewed a few on the show already. So I've started to develop ideas about what makes them work. And Titanfall 2 brings a lot of interesting elements to the table. There's the flavour of the game, which is equal parts militaristic to science fiction. But there's also a ton of interesting, fully developed ideas at work. Its varied play mechanics, stunning locations and intriguing, environments make this a memorable title - perhaps even one of the best fps games of its hardware generation. It's certainly one of the most inventively designed games I've played in recent years.
I mean, it has to be good, right? When you get in the robot, it has rocket launchers in its backpack and everything! And when you listen to those puppies fly, it's practically giant robot ASMR!
Titanfall 2 is also available on PC and Playstation 4.
If this video whets your appetite for more sci-fi shooty bang bang, you can check out the review teased at the end of this video, where I look at QUAKE 4 for the Xbox 360. Here's a direct link:
