Most of the Star World's exits, save for one, do NOT go anywhere though they do count for exit completion on your file (I was confirming this by exiting the game and using the Suspend Points though I forgot at times to save in the game first to make sure). In order to advance, you must initiate the key exits.

These stages each have a different colored baby Yoshi (except the standard green) that must be fed enough food to grow into a grown Yoshi for use.

Red Yoshis blows out fire from any Koopa shell in it's mouth when released. Yellow Yoshis, with the shell in its mouth, stomps the ground causing any ground enemies to flip / get hit while Blue Yoshis can fly.

The Star World stages also connect to various locations throughout the game though they must be connected to fully use, save for one which immediately goes to Bowser Castle's Front Door.
