Berserk: My First Impressions/Reaction to The Black Swordsman Arc

So I never read Berserk before. The only thing I’ve heard from the series are the following. Magna spoilers ahead...

1. Guts is the protagonist of this story who wields a massive ass sword
2. Griffith betrays Guts
3. The Golden Age arc is considered “peak fiction” in all of manga

Anyway The Deluxe Vol 1 edition of Berserk covers the first 3 volumes of the original manga, and teases the opening chapters of The Golden Age arc. I should probably mention to anyone interested in reading Berserk that this series isn’t for the feint of heart. This is a dark fantasy/medieval series which at its core is violent, gruesome, and the images depicted are terrifyingly horrific.

That being said, I really need to compliment the art in Berserk. This is good, like jaw dropping good, you can even say terrifyingly beautiful. I found myself just enamored at some of the manga panels and Kentaro Miura (Rest In Peace) did a fantastic job of conveying the gritty/violence atmospheric setting presented here within the story of Berserk.

So lets talk about the story, the opening chapters shows off the character of Guts. This angry man who wields a massive sword slicing practically everyone who pisses him off like deli meat at a market. There’s clearly a mysterious past about Guts and why he seems so aggressive for most of this story but interestingly enough there are real quick subtle moments where his face conveys the opposite such as sadness and fear. Which through obvious context clues we can infer Guts is a multifaceted and complex protagonist instead of the stereotypical one note tough guy acts he puts on for everybody else.

Puck the fairy who joins Guts on these adventures, gives us this reassurance too. I found it clever that Kentaro Miura would use Puck’s perspective and Puck's abilities to know exactly how Guts is feeling and what he has experienced, despite it being a mystery in these opening chapters of the story. Although I can’t say I blame Guts for being so triggered and angry all the time. I mean he’s marked with the Brand, this cursed symbol that summons evil beings that constantly pursue him.

The story of Berserk didn't fully interest me until I arrived at The Guardians of Desire chapter. In this arc we’re introduced to The Count the first major antagonist. Prior towards the introduction of The Count, any opposing/demonic forces Guts dismantled while looking cool or unique lacked any real depth to them. The Count for all intents and purposes turned out to be a tragic character.

Even caging up his daughter Theresia like a bird in her room for 7 years, (albeit extreme) can be seen as an act of love from an overly protective father. If anything I found it more impressive that The Count, who literally got stripped a part of his humanity away to become a demonic being showed human characteristics/empathy when it came time to him to choose between scarfing himself over his daughter.

The exchange of dialogue between Theresia and Guts towards the end of the arc. Theresia having witnessed the truth of her family, made her contemplate the thought of suicide. What happens soon after isn't Guts trying to comfort her but rather encourage her to take her life. I could be wrong but I think this was Guts way of showing her some tough life to persevere because if he's done it so can she. Sadly her way of persevering is now angrily pinning everything that happened to her and her father on Guts exacting revenge in the future but to my surprise the saddened tearful look on Guts face with Puck looking on was what truly got me invested in our protagonist.

The beginning chapters of this story took a while for me to get into but I'm interested in seeing what the Berserk Vol. 2 Deluxe edition and The Golden Age arc has in store for me.
