The Messenger first playthrough, part 2
1I am very fortunate to have somehow avoided spoilers for this game (or if I ever saw them, I completely forgot about them). Even looking at Wikipedia will immediately spoil a mechanic that is not introduced or even hinted at for multiple hours, and experiencing it unspoiled firsthand is the coolest part of the game, with huge implications on the rest of the playthrough.
The only hints that the game was clearly holding out on me to begin with were early signs of backtracking, as well as the sheer number of Power Seals, as indicated by the chest in the shop telling you the remaining number. Now it becomes clear just how that backtracking is going to work.
It appears that backtracking itself seems to be its own puzzle element, in terms of figuring out how to reach certain places. While that's an interesting idea, and I do think the level design is extremely cool for how it pulls this off, it can also wear thin sometimes, as you can wind up wasting a significant chunk of time going about it from the wrong direction. I have to wonder if there will be further ergonomics upgrades down the line.
