Zeliard (DOS) first playthrough, part 2 of 3 (from Helada to Llama)
The honeymoon's over, and Zeliard is starting to demonstrate how much it expects of the player in terms of both platforming and combat, and meanwhile turns up the heat on the economy.
It also doesn't help that I gave up on being endlessly confused by the maps in the ice area to the point where I skipped acquiring the shoes that nullify ice physics; it was clear that I could get through the entire area without them (although a couple of platforms weren't particularly fun that way).
The areas thereafter are where the difficulty really ramps up. The economy in Tumba is abysmal, with a 1:2 almas-to-gold ratio, which is extremely punishing when you're also very likely to take a lot of damage and want to buy supplies here. The environment itself is also oppressive, with damaging floors that you need to find a progression item to navigate through. There's more progression on top of that though, which isn't conveyed particularly clearly...
The sixth area is particularly confusing, with a couple of mysterious doors thrown in that can't be opened. While the area itself gave me a ton of trouble, the boss seemed surprisingly forgiving (especially relative to the previous one), at least when played patiently.
We caught a glimpse of the 7th area, where the game amusingly gave us the toned-down 80's version of a brief hell run, but that situation was quickly resolved, so we'll be able to continue exploring "safely" next time...
