Welcome to Feature Creep! A series dedicated to those little features and mini-games we find all over the video game compendium. To start things off, I'm covering drinking in video games! An act we get a lot of laughs out of, that we might be taking for granted or not putting enough thought into.
Drinking in games has a weird history, largely because how cultures view drinking is incredibly varied from country to country. In the United States, prohibition and the temperance movement really cut down on our consumption of alcohol in general, and sort of shifted it into this more private affair. Not that we all still hide our drinking habits or anything, but we tend to view drinking with an eccentricity. Like this special thing. Compare this to some European countries, where the drinking age is lower, and alcohol consumption is almost a historical staple of dinner. A little bit of wine with every meal is relatively common in places like Spain, and because it doesn’t have this quirky taboo nature in those regions, children are pretty familiar with the concept of alcohol and don’t grow up viewing it like this rite of passage or forbidden nectar. Again, not that underage drinking doesn’t happen in these other places, but different societies treat drinking- and other things- differently. The way we treat drinking in our respective society influences how we portray those things in our respective media. And when said media crosses over into other countries or cultures, it sometimes has to play by said cultures’ rules. This is why we sometimes see references to alcohol in Japanese games changed, altered, or straight-up removed when they get localized for the West. But the iconography of drinking is harder to scrub out of a game’s identity. Drinking in video games is basically as old as video games themselves.
