I never expected to like The Witcher as fiction; it looked silly at a glance and I was already planning to cover Dragon Age. I poured some leftover Christmas wine and sat down with The Witcher: Enhanced Edition and accidentally fell into the hole. Game's fun, turns out.

The Witcher may have originated from a series of novels, but it manages to use the video game medium to mechanically convey its themes, explore the world in a meaningful way, and only kind of fumble the delivery, at least if certain forum posts are taken seriously. I like The Witcher for its cruel world, but its clear focus on empathy. Here's my take.

Music comes from The Witcher soundtrack, with a couple pulls from various other games.

I sampled some footage from the mission Force Recon from this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ztn8q6PVidU
