This is one of my favorite games of all time. Unfortunately, it has never been re-released and emulation for it is a disaster. I am using a fan remaster but as they’ve decided that including a PS2 bios file in the download for the thing is a good idea, when it isn’t legal, I will not be providing any kind of link to it. Just google it.

Also, if you post it in the comments, I will delete your message.

Even with this fan remaster, there are still numerous graphical glitches and slowdowns. Some of which are incredibly distracting. All you can do is live with it, because there’s no way to play this game without some kind of issue. Even with software mode.

Notes
The US version features progressive scan, which is enabled by holding triangle and X during the boot process. It’s enabled for this recording.

Several dungeons feature this truly awful shimmering effect along the left and top of the screen, which is caused by upscaling. It really is just terrible on the eyes and so I opted to place some black bars to spare the viewer from the pain. This can be fixed by setting Half-Pixel Offset to Special Aggressive but it has the side effect of completely ruining cutscenes.

The Einherjar you acquire are randomized. I don’t bother trying to get the best ones possible as this isn’t a new game+ playthrough, which is significantly more difficult than the initial playthrough.

The cutscene when you reach the boss of Turgen Mine is completely broken in the emulator. Fortunately, it’s a side quest area and there isn’t any dialogue related to it.

You may notice the save in Surts. The original idea was to set turn to ice and leave the fire blessing in to reduce damage but it turns out, this didn’t work the way I thought it would, as the conversion does not apply to special attacks.

After Crawsus, I begin the optional power leveling. Dylan, Lezard, Leone and Arngrim leave the party as part of the story and depending on what level they are when this happens, you receive several powerful items.

Details of the grind: Acquire the skill Training via red legs, strengthening and weakness runes.
Red strengthening (Black Pearl) - Destroy the front shell of Disgusting Shell in Crawsus.
Red weakness (Piercing Imprint) - Break the right arm of Goatman in Ancient Forest.

Once this was done, I went back to Chateau Obsession and fought encounters until they learned training and I had enough magic crystals to restore the experience pig sealstone.

After finishing that, I took the time to gather some drops for various skills with the party I intended on using all the way through the rest of the game and this ended up taking up the bulk of the grind time due to just terrible drop rates. Then, I went back to Crawsus and fought the boss there over and over again.

The cutscene after you leave the Palace features this eye destroying strobing effect in the background. I got around this by setting Half-Pixel Offset to special and disabling Merge Sprite. This causes black lines to appear, which are upscaling issues, but the trade off is worth it. The following cutscene where she leaves has the Half-Pixel Offset set back to normal, with Merge Sprite enabled.
