This is what the "M" on Mario's iconic red hat REALLY stands for...

If you think it stands for Mario then sadly, you're wrong but don't feel too bad because a LOT of people assume the same thing. After all, why wouldn't you considering Mario's name DOES start with an M.

However, Nintendo have officially gone on the record and revealed that the M on Mario's hat DOESN'T stand for Mario. In fact, it's got nothing to do with Mario at all. Instead, it's a fun easter egg that, at the time, was originally put there to cross promote ANOTHER beloved game that Nintendo were developing at the time - Metroid.

The team at Nintendo loved how Mario's hat looked so they just left the now iconic M in place and the rest is history!
