X-MEN: MUTANT REIGN Plug and Play (JAKKS Pacific/Amaze Entertainment, 2006) - Long Play
22This plug and play seems rarer than most: A 2006 X-Men game developed by Amaze Entertainment and published by JAKKS Pacific. From the footage available online, it looks pretty good, so I decided to buy it to share with all of you!
After game thoughts:
The X-Men plug and play Mutant Reign, is way better than it had to be—and superior to the Uncanny X-Men game we got on NES. I would have preferred one game with a definitive ending, but instead we get themed levels for Gambit, Storm, Cyclops, Beast, and someone named Wolverine.
Gambit's stage is a stealth(!) game in an overhead view that takes place in the Danger Room, fighting increasingly difficult bots, including some that are definitely "Cylons." He can summon Nightcrawler for some OP assistance. BAMF!
Storm's stage is a side-scrolling shoot 'em up! She fires bolts of lightning, can charge her shot, and can blow enemies away with a tornado. Interestingly, the more damage she takes, the slower her attack, and not attacking allows her health/energy to refill.
Cyclops' levels feel close to the design of the NES game (but more fun). He has to rescue hostages in the school from anti-mutant extremists without getting captured himself. The bonus stages place him at the center, requiring quick reflexes. His death animation is amazing.
Beast has to climb burning buildings, punching windows to rescue trapped people and then dropping them over the side (they have a pole, they'll be fine, probably). He has to avoid Pyro and falling, flaming debris.
Wolverine's stage is a sidescrolling beat em up as he escapes the Weapon X lab. It's pretty fun but repetitive, with multiple attacks, including a neat backward throw. He heals constantly, of course, and can go into a berzerk mode to attack faster.
All of the pixel art and backgrounds in this game are beautiful, but I particularly liked the courtyards in Cyclops' stage and the waterfall in Wolverine's stage 3, the least annoying ice level I've ever played.
The game on Normal mode is a pushover, but "X-treme mode" poses much more of a challenge and feels Nintendo hard. This is clearly a high-score chaser, but each loop of a level gets progressively more difficult, with more enemies and more varied attacks. I'm quite impressed! Nice job, Amaze Entertainment!
