"Zillion", originally titled Akai Koudan Zillion (Red Photon Zillion) in Japan, is a space adventure platformer developed and published by Sega for the Master System in 1987. The game serves as a companion tie-in to Tatsunoko Production's Zillion anime series. A sequel titled Zillion II was released in 1988. The peacekeeping force White Knights embark on a mission to dismantle the Nohza Empire's stronghold on Planet X. Leading the charge is J.J., the protagonist from the Zillion anime, tasked with infiltrating the enemy base and securing five vital floppy disks essential for triggering the base's self-destruct mechanism.

As the Mothership descends upon the planet's surface, J.J. enters into the enemy stronghold, where he navigates corridors, combat enemies, and evade traps. Gameplay mostly takes place underground in a labyrinthine base with interconnected rooms, resurfacing only for health restoration or to depart upon mission completion. Before triggering the base's self-destruct mechanism, you must first rescue your fellow White Knight comrades, Champ, Apple, and Amy, scattered throughout the labyrinth's labyrinthine corridors.

Capsules conceal vital codes and potent power-ups, scattered among obstacles including tripwires, guards, laser turrets, and force fields. Most chambers needs the acquisition of computer ID cards and the input of corresponding four-digit codes found within each chamber. Following their rescue, players can also assume the roles of Apple or Champ, each with unique attributes; Apple has more agility but less resilience, while Champ is stronger but slower. All characters can acquire enhancements to their gun's potency, speed, agility, and vitality. One last code triggers the initiation of the Nozha base's self-destruct sequence.

Overall, "Zillion" is a great mix of exploration, action and puzzle-solving, necessitating careful exploration and strategic thinking. Visually, Zillion has crisp visuals and distinctive character designs. Controls, while initially a bit quirky, quickly become second nature. The randomized access codes adds a layer of replayability, ensuring each playthrough is unique. Given the labyrinth's large size, players may need to draw a map to complete a thorough exploration.
