#174 MICKEY MANIA - FULL PLAYTHROUGH (Normal Mode) - Beating My SNES Games
Here is of my full playthrough of Mickey Mania done, as always using original hardware on a Super Nintendo with no cheats or save states!
Follow me on instagram @Cabin_game_fever to join me live or via my reviews and uploads to witness me take down all the games currently in my SNES colleciton, following on from having already beaten all 234 licenced UK releases for the NES. I only use original carts, no cheats & no save states.
REVIEW: (Originally posted on Instagram):
-The third and final outing of Disney's favourite mouse adventure on the Snes steers away from the successful format already trodden through Capcom's Magical Quest games. As Traveller's Tales do away with the many costume changes and their varied abilities they offered, in favour of a far more one dimensional projectile throw mechanic.
The lack of original flair extends into the platforming too. Mickey's single style jump is a world away from the dynamics of the Climber & Safari outfits of Magical Quest series.
What really does shine through is the outstandingly beautiful backdrops and feature designs. Some really clever techniques have been used to really push the snes to its limit in creating what feels increasingly like pages from actual cartoon, which is the intention given the story takes Mickey through all his greatest Disney adventures, beginning with wonderful Black & White rendition of SteamBoat Willie (anyone ever actually watch that one? The poor cow omg!).
The detail driven into the animations, backgrounds, characters and level design is there be marvelled at. Sadly, is so often the case, the sacrifice comes through sloppy hitboxes and moments of pure cheapness. Certian enemies; the the exploding skeletons and stage 2 boss especially feel particularly unfair, leaving me to claim stage 2 is actually the hardest in the game!
Despite the inclusion of only 3 bosses for the 6 stages, the lack of a password means the limited life & continue count, does render the experience rather tough at first, however with little practice repeating success steps proves fairly straightforward.
Though arguably better on Megadrive, and certainly superior on the PSone, the snes port proves worthy of a play it its all you've got, purely for the visuals alone. It's a playable game but rather forgettable by the same stroke.
