A Fun, Fast & Focused Cyberpunk Take on Streets of Rogue?! – Cyber Cult City –
Cyber Cult City is an Indie, Action Roguelite set in a Cyberpunk city, with cyber cults!
Who would have thought!
Cyber Cult City is sort of a Cyberpunk take on Streets of Rogue, but faster, and neo drenched, and rocking a hover board.
Neo drenched and rocking a hoverboard: you have arrived cyber fans!
A Faster, Focused, Cyberpunk Take on Streets of Rogue:
Cyber Cult City has the random, procedural generation city block ‘dungeons’ like Streets of Rogue, along with the freeform way of completing your mission in each map.
You can hack cars, cyborgs, and lots of other electrical objects using battery charges to set traps for your foe, making your task of knocking them over and taking their stuff easier.
Like in Streets of Rogue, each map you have a mission to complete, like destroy 10 cyborgs, or rescue 10 people, and when you complete the mission, you to move along to the next map.
Like Streets of Rogue, in Cyber Cult City, maps have random modifiers, like Neo haze, which makes it harder to see at range, or heavy armor cyborgs; or electrical resistance cyborgs, adding some fun modifiers to the missions, mixing up your approach to taking back the city block.
Also, like Streets of Rogue, Cyber Cult City is packing that delightful pixel graphic look that many find so endearing; (I know I do).
Unlike Streets of Rogue, in Cyber Cult City the character roster is much smaller, and you have to unlock the other characters, and is absent the local co-op.
However, in Cyber Cult City, you get a hoverboard, and can use it to grind over cars, smash cardboard boxes for loot, and ride giant spinning fans, letting them launch you across the map; super fun short fast travel!
A Fun CyberPunk Random World:
Cyber Cult City is actually an evac shooter, as you’re the city mayor here, you still got some pull in your fallen city, so after you complete your task, you call your chopper, and head off to the next zone; for more direct executive action; fun!
As a well kitted out and connected mayor, you start with a recharging energy blaster and a sword, and you can dash into enemies with it, cutting them down melee mayor style!
Your gun recharges over time, as does your melee stamina, so don’t worry about tracking down ammo; it’s the future.
You have some limited grenades and a trap too; these are limited use, but luckily, you can score more off your many foes!
Remember: You’re the Cool Mayor, so you get to do drive-bys with your hover board!
Power has its perks!
Enemies drop money, blew em away and score their stash!
You can hack cars and cyborgs to seize control of them too, turning them into your weapons; though hacking costs battery power.
There is a sort of Slay The Spire like map you progress through, also procedural, where you pick your path forward through the next few lvls.
In each city block, you can score cash, batteries, traps, and grenades, off dropped cyborgs, and
you can grind over cardboard boxes to loot them, sometimes getting traps and other goodies.
Don’t forget to grind over those boxes!
Remember: You’re the Cool Mayor!
You can find perks and stat upgrades in crates, improving your use of certain abilities, like with guns, or the sword; some of them are locked, so better find that key Mayor Man!
You can enter some of the buildings and talk to people for side tasks, for a reward!
NPCs can also give you upgrades, like 1 improving your traps damage by 25%; wow!
Remember: You do NOT heal between missions unless you find a rest stop: this mayor is on a roll, and will not stop their executive rampage!
You can rarely find healing in cardboard boxes too; handy.
Meta Progression:
There are 4 class unlocks, unlocked by beating the game with each class before it.
You can also find drone parts, to upgrade the damage, fire rate, speed, and energy of your drone.
You can also gain research points, and upgrade all your characters; things like 20% more battery power, melee damage up by 10, +20 to hp, meaningful and stacking powers like that.
Both the Drone parts and the Research Beakers are kept between runs; letting you amass some real meta progression power here; nice.
Controller Support is present, as is good old mouse and keyboard.
I found mouse and keyboard control felt much better and more precise here, so that is what I used in the above video.
Anyway, Cyber Cult City is a fun, fast and focused Cyberpunk take on Streets of Rogue, with an energy blaster and a sword, and is easily worth a wishlist and a watch.
