A Sort of Souls like ARPG + Horde Survival? Yes! – The Awakener Forgotten Oath Demo –
The Awakener Forgotten Oath is a third person Action RPG sort of Souls like + Horde Survival / Vampire Survivors room survival, combining a sort of Souls like combat system with the Horde Survival game loop; it’s good.
Horde Survival + Sort of Souls like:
The Awakener Forgotten Oath has the 3rd Person combat, multiple attacks, blocking, and dodge rolling of Dark Souls and its likes, along with the Horde Survival game loop of clearing spawning monsters to lvl up and survive until the boss, while picking 1 of 3 upgrades as you grow stronger and stronger.
Unlike Vampire Survivors, you directly attack here, and have an active use dodge.
Also, the battles here are broken up into rooms, of which there are a few, and some of which have traps, which can be used against your foes; fun!
Combat:
Unlike Dark Souls, in The Awakener Forgotten Oath, there is no stamina system: You are unlimited in how often you choose to make regular attacks or dodge, so keep swinging here!
Instead, you build up a power meter as you attack foes, which charges up your awaken power, which blasts enemies around you when you discharge it; it lasts for a while, and you can turn it off to conserve power; best saved for bosses.
Additionally, you choose an artifact which grants a powerful ability with a cooldown, some of which have multiple charges.
There’s an ice dash, shadow blades, or summoning a “fire elemental”; the last one is not what you expect, and very fun.
Meta Progression:
As The Awakener Forgotten Oath is influenced by the Horde Survival/ Wave Survival games, Meta Progression is a strong component of the gameplay.
There are two unlockable characters you can play as, which you unlock using the odd coins called “Soul’s Residual”.
You can also use these coins to unlock talents.
I found the two characters I played with here both felt good and were different enough from each other, with their own strengths and feel, and found both fun to play.
You also have the ability to improve all your character’s performance using purple “Nihility Crystals” at altars, gaining minor improvements, like increasing total damage by 5% each upgrade, increased damage done to elites by 10% per upgrade, powerful stacking stuff like that.
Controller support is present, as is good old mouse and keyboard.
I found that the gamepad feels much better here, so that is what I used in the above gameplay.
Note: This is an early look at the demo for The Awakener Forgotten Oath so any bugs or other oddness is not representative of the final product.
Still, The Awakener Forgotten Oath is a fun Horde Survival ARPG with strong Souls like influences that feels good to play, and is easily worth a wishlist and a watch.
