Amnesia: The Dark Descent playthrough Part 1
1Not long ago I was trying to decide which game I should play, with this and Dead Space being the two major contenders. What pushed my decision was that, at least at the time, Dead Space was being offered for free on Origin. So I went ahead, went through that game, and was quite glad I did.
Lo and behold, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, and Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, are both being offered for free right now on Steam. Since the game was already installed and ready to go, I decided that would be the perfect game to run through today. So here I am. Another horror game, but this one with a vastly different approach. Whereas Dead Space was a shooter, with a good focus on combat, this game really has no combat. You aren't supposed to defend yourself. You are supposed to hide.
Overall, this game really is just an extension of the old point and click adventure genre. That's not a bad thing. And it's surprising how many horror games really are part of that genre. Alone in the Dark, Resident Evil, they all have their roots back to those point and click style puzzle games. Of course, new technology, good 3D engines for example, let us take things in a whole different direction. Focus on insanity, focus on physics, the interplay between light and dark. Game developers are able to experiment more.
I went long today because I wanted to get through another hub. And today I am able to go long. Much like One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3, these hubs are going to take a while each to beat. So we'll see how many days end up going long or short as I suss this particular game out.
