Understanding mathematics better is a way to cope, for example, with artificial intelligence and to explain and shape the beauty of nature. Naturalist and mathematician Miranda Cheng is engaged in mathematics at the highest level. She obtained her PhD on String Theory and Black Holes. Together with colleagues, Cheng discovered a new moonshine theory, the "Umbral Moonshine". She takes the viewer back to her roots in Taipei, Taiwan. And scientist Erik Verlinde talks about Cheng's achievements.

Episode 4 of 'Big Questions', a series in which science journalist Rob van Hattum takes a journey through science with eight Dutch researchers who are at the top of their field. Their 'big questions' are central. They tell about their heroes, visit special places and talk about the breakthroughs in their field.
