How does a bird fly? Biomechanical engineer David Lentink is fascinated by the art of flight. In his lab at Stanford University he examines in minute detail how sparrow hawks and hummingbirds manoeuvre, deal with turbulence and fly. How do birds do it?

Lentink discovers at his old aircraft modeling club that his models, built 25 years ago, can still fly like the best of them. In Turin, Leonardo da Vinci's notes on the art of flying birds are on display. Lentink admires the original Codex on the Flight of Birds.

Episode 3 of 'Big Questions', a series in which science journalist Rob van Hattum takes a journey through science with eight Dutch researchers who are at the top of their field. Their 'big questions' are central. They tell about their heroes, visit special places and talk about the breakthroughs in their field.
