09-JUL-1984 Norwegian Sea, just west of Trondheim
We setup near Trondheim to intercept any convoy making its way from Bergen, and we intercepted one such so.
With a strong thermal layer, we were able to detect the convoy: 2 escorts, a Perry-class FFG and a Knox-class FFG escorting 3 NATO RORO freighters. However, they have helo support, probably multiple helos, and they can call in fixed-wing support at any time.
Doesn't matter, we have to get closer. They are a bit too far away at the moment, and I can't trust the range I got through the thermal layer.
Unfortunately, we found ourselves in the middle of a sonobuoy net, as our brief moment on the surface as we dove for contact was enough to attract the attention of a fixed-wing patrol aircraft. And a torpedo was already dropped south of us. We tried sneaking toward the east, but figured we probably should attack now, as the escorts are heading this way, and the freighters have turned around for their dash toward the south. We launched half of our anti-ship torpedoes, hoping some of them will intersect a wake from one or more of the ships.
Both escorts turned away trying to get away from the wakehomers, but the Knox was intercepted by one of the other torpedoes and went down. The Perry managed to escape toward the west, but I sent one more torpedo after him, and it also sank. That leaves only the 3 freighters, now unescorted, except for the helos and the fixed-wing patrol craft. However, they are far to the south now, as far away as 30km, if I can trust the range estimates I got. And those helos are extremely annoying.
Tried my best to go south, but those helos deep driving me under, until I said enough. I had two people standing by in the sail. The moment we are clear enough, they are to jump up with our Strela MANPADs and shoot at the helos if it's 3km or closer. And after a bit of cat and mouse, we managed to shoot both of them down. However, I can't do anything about the fixed wing as it kept its distance.
In any case, I used the radar and I can see NO SIGN of those ships. Somehow, during the time I've been held submerged, they managed to get away.
It was a long and fruitless chase.
Even the HQ was dismayed.
And the war continues... in the next episode.
