(CCPlays) 1984 Soviet Campaign | Part 9: Convoy Unwelcomed | Cold Waters DotMOD
Previously, in the 1984 Soviet Campaign of Cold Waters... We had crippled the US battlegroup that sortied into the Norwegian sea, and we resupplied. We are poised to attack the next convoy heading for Bergen, Norway.

Welcome to Captain Chang Plays (CCP) Cold Waters. We are playing the 1984 Soviet Campaign, at a slightly lower difficulty level of "casual".
NOTE: This battle is quite long, but I've sped up the boring parts.

08-AUG-1984 Barents Sea, just north of Murmansk
We have just left Murmansk, and we are to transit to Bergen at best possible speed. We may be too late to intercept the convoy, which intelligence estimates to have reached the Norwegian Sea just as we departed.

We were forced under as we encountered an underwater contact.
We wish no confrontation, and in these waters we are likely to encounter one of those quiet Kobben diesel boats. We chose to leave them behind with a bit of speed. Fortunately, a trawler and two whales soon appeared on the scene, and I deliberately put them between me and the suspected submarine's position, and once that was done, we sped up to 15 kt and left the area. We have a convoy to catch.
09-AUG-1984 Norwegian Sea, just west of Bergen
We have intercepted what appears to be the convoy. We stay submerged and then went to 100m. Sonar can hear at least one dipping sonar from a NATO helo, and we soon picked up 4 different escorts: 1 Knox, 1 Perry, 1 County, and 1 Spruance. However, we haven't heard any civilian ships yet. Still, it's nothing to worry about, as the escorts, being in front, often obscure the noises of their charges, esp. from long range.
We waited while keeping a weary eye on the dipping sonars from the helos, but they never came close.
We finally picked up a NATO container and a NATO RORO. We decided to engage the escorts, create a hole, and charge through. Didn't quite work that way. We managed to put one torpedo into County which crippled it, then as the Spruance and Perry rumbled past, one torpedo into each, which crippled the Spruance and sank the Perry. RORO was caught by one of my long-range shots and sunk. The container ship got away along with one of the escorts.
They did shoot back, but most torpedoes did not even come close. With most torpedoes expended, we decided to put our last torpedo toward the County DD, which sank. The final escort decided to turn back and look for us. We departed the area before the escort or the air cover got too lucky. Some of those sonobuoys did come within 2 km.
We did end up taking a hit which temporarily took out the bow sonar, but fortunately we didn't really need it then.
We reported our results to HQ and they were pleased. It's time to go back to Murmansk for some repairs and more torpedoes.
10-AUG-1984 Murmansk, USSR
As we reloaded our stock of torpedoes, we received new orders. We are to intercept an American convoy heading for the port of Portsmouth, England. Portsmouth is at the very southern tip of our operational area. Due to the repairs needed for the tubes, we may not be in time to intercept this convoy, but we have to try for the sake of the Motherland, or the Politburo.
11-AUG-1984 Just outside Murmansk, USSR
We have departed on our way to UK waters... if we can catch it.
And the war continues in the next episode.
