Previously, in the 1984 Soviet Campaign of Cold Waters... We went back to Murmansk for torpedo reloads after sinking the enemy sub carrying their commandos going to Andoya. We left immediately as our next job is to intercept an enemy battlegroup that just sortied from the US...

-----

Welcome to Captain Chang Plays (CCP) Cold Waters. We are playing the 1984 Soviet Campaign, at a slightly lower difficulty level of "casual".

NOTE: This battle is quite long.

Thumbnail: Iowa-class BB after eating 3 torpedoes.

------

07-AUG-1984 Near Lofoten Islands

We are to intercept a NATO battlegroup, and we submerged ahead of their track. And this group has serious firepower. I'm not sure I brought enough torpedoes. Why does a Victor I only have 18 torps?

As sensors get more info, we just keep finding more ships. A Knox, A Perry, 2 Type 42s, 2 Lander LST, 1 IWOJima, 1 RORO freighter, and the biggest target... 1 Iowa class battleship, that's even bigger than our Kirov-class cruiser. Except the Yanks left it with conventional steam power.

Now I am certain we did not have enough torpedoes. I have NO IDEA how many torpedoes it would take to sink the Iowa.

But first we have to get inside, past the patrol plane and the ASW helos. AND the screening frigates.

Which is when we were discovered by the frigates, and the convoy started to scatter.

I went northwest, then change my mind by going north, around the dipping helo, only slowing to ahead full to launch a decoy to stop most of the incoming torpedoes, then sped to the north. Surprisingly, only 1 frigate was really coming after me, the rest are trying to escort the ships and following the U-turn.

The Knox went after my decoy, which has attracted no less than 7 torpedoes, which is the perfect time for me to go shallow and slow, shoot a wake-homer at her, and speed past her into the middle of the convoy. The RORO, 2 x Landers, and Type 42 are heading northwest, the Iowa and Iwo Jima are heading west with a type 42, and Perry is somewhere near the middle.

Iowa and Iwo Jima are pulling 30 plus kt and I can't catch that. At least not when there is easier prey around. I fired a wakehomer each for the RORO and Lander, even as I dodged torpedoes from the Perry, by making a complete loop. One lander was sunk by the torpedo meant for the Perry, And both the Perry and the Type 42 to the north are charging in. I nailed both with wakehomers, then chased down the last lander. Now we're left with 2 escorts, Iowa, and the Iwo Jima.

I checked sonar, and it seems Iowa had turned around trying to make sure Iwo Jima get away, and as both are capable of 32 kt or higher, I will never be able to catch them, but if Iowa wanted to off himself, be my guest. AFAIK, Iowa has no anti-sub weapons. Unfortunately, we are down to only 3 torpedoes.

I got into the firing range of Iowa and started sending 1 torpedo at a time, as the range is down to under 3 km, practically point-blank. After the third torpedo, she's listing by 30 degrees to port, but she never sank. With no torpedoes left, I turned northwest and departed the area at flank speed ahead of the remaining escort turning back.

HQ was happy in that I had wiped out most of the battlegroup, esp. the landing ships that are necessary for NATO to reinforce Andoya. However, I and the entire crew was surprised to learn that Iowa did NOT sink. Somehow that ship was able to counterflood and balance itself and managed to beach itself on the Norwegian shore. The Yanks are expected to retrieve the ship and return it to the US after emergency repairs are completed so it is seaworthy.

We have been recalled back to Murmansk for resupply.

08-AUG-1984 Murmansk, USSR

We've arrived back in Murmansk and replenished our torpedo supply.

We have also received new orders to intercept a supply convoy heading for Bergen.

The war continues in the next episode.
