Duke Nukum was released in 1991. Set in the year 1997 (which was the "near future" at the time of game release). Dr. Proton is determined to take over the world with his army of Techbots. Duke Nukem takes upon the task of stopping him. Duke Nukem II follows up the game in 1993.

Although most people will know the Duke Nukem franchise for its toilet humor and adult-oriented content, Apogee originally made the first two games as a kid-friendly sidescroller.
