The 2023 pixel remaster of the legendary 1987 Final Fantasy is the definitive way to play this game for sure. It absolutely holds up today and that is saying a lot considering it is the grandfather of the JRPG genre.

Four heroes called the Warriors of Light emerge to try and restore the light of their crystals which has been darkened by evil Fiends. At the beginning of the game they defeat Garland, an evil knight who kidnaps Princess Sarah of Cornelia, in order to lure the Warriors of Light into the Chaos Shrine to kill him, so that the Four Fiends and later the Chaos of Dissidia would send him back 2000 years into the past to become Chaos himself, creating a time loop in the process. They journey far across forests, mountains, seas, and have to deal with great and fierce opposition to hope to reach their destiny. The final goal? To defeat Chaos and restore peace to the world.

Final Fantasy is an absolute gem and staple in the series, no doubt. It boasts probably my single favorite video game soundtrack ever (Perhaps tied with Old School RuneScape), and some nostalgic but well held graphical art. The actual mechanics of the game work extremely well, they are simple and allow you to make the game as easy or hard for yourself as you choose. There is a great sense of adventure obviously and there is plenty to explore and see.

The game is made with high levels of passion but it is not without flaw. I felt it to be extremely imbalanced in both directions. Two of the classes are borderline useless / self handicaps; Thief & White Mage, and the final boss is absurdly difficult and RNG dependent. The last real gripe I would have would be how many of the NPCs have the same appearance as each other and this can create confusion on which one you are supposed to be talking to to advance the story / acquire a key item.

The original Final Fantasy stands the test of time and is one of the greats of gaming history. It is a lot like Pokémon so if you enjoy that series you will enjoy this one.
