91Independent journalism is under pressure worldwide. In many countries, journalists are obstructed, injured or even killed while doing their jobs. Where will this end? What does the future of journalism look like?
According to the People's Tribunal for the Murder of Journalists, 81% of the murder cases of journalists are not solved. Recently, more than 20 reporters have already died in the war in Ukraine. And in Russia, the largest country in the world, there are now no independent news media at all. The Netherlands has also dropped from place 6 to 28 on the World Press Freedom Index.
Still, many journalists are showing fighting spirit. They use data mining and hacking methods or set up new networks and international collaborations. Thanks to their perseverance and resourcefulness, journalism is like the mythical Greek monster Hydra: for every head that is chopped off, two new ones grow.
But where will this end? What does the future of journalism look like? What is our role as citizens? Can we turn the tide and create a safer environment for truth-telling?
