In the last seven days before the Russian invasion, Bram Vermeulen and his team travel in Ukraine on the Soviet-made train to the Eastern Front and speak to Ukrainians about their expectations, their fears and their hopes for what is to come. It turns out to be the last seven days of a free Ukraine.

For most travelers on the train, the war we now see daily in the news began not now, but eight years ago. The fighting has not only divided the country, but also driven families and spouses apart, fathers and daughters apart.

As unimaginable as an invasion in those final days may seem, everyone on board realizes the potential consequences. From the hip influencer on TikTok who knows he won't be able to live under a Russian occupation, to the conductress who has left her children at home, weapons and all.

On the Eastern Front, residents who have been living with mortar attacks and artillery fire for years appear to have little choice but to stay. 'Life is war,' we hear at the front.

Originally aired on March 22, 2022, called 'De trein naar de oorlog'.
