198In 2007 Bioshock was clever. It's underwater setting was completely unique, and it's narrative still makes the best of all time lists even now. But 14 years later, is Bioshock still great? (Bioshock Review)
This 2021 Bioshock review re-assesses Bioshock against modern games; looking at where it still holds up, and unfortunately where it could have done more. Bioshock was one of the biggest games in 2007, with it's jaw dropping setting of Rapture and a slew of clever systems. The option to save or harvested Little Sisters and that genre defining moment that instantly went down in gaming history. But now, modern gaming is completely different. We have more games with masterpiece narratives. And we live in the age of Open Worlds, Always Online and Live Services. So where does that leave Bioshock?
I cut out a section from this Bioshock review, where I compared the original Bioshock to the remaster. (I did a playthrough of each, which is why some of the footage looks different). But if you are wondering whether to play the original Bioshock or the remaster, I'd say the original. It's more atmospheric and an overall better experience. The remaster made Rapture look prettier, more polished and less gritty. The option to widen the FOV in the remaster also makes us feel less vulnerable, plus it crashed 3 times for me... There's more I didn't like, but the changes basically watered down the best parts of the game. Play the original Bioshock on the Series X/S with the resolution upgrade and the unlocked framerate, or on a PC. You'll have a better time, I promise.
