Is Open World RPG Design good? | Game Discourses
In this episode we consider the value in open world game design in the genre of the RPG, and consider how the freedom to roam impacts narrative design, story-telling, mechanics and overall game experience for the player. As case studies we take a look at the Final Fantasy series and different applications of linear game design vs compartmentalised worlds - such as in Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy VII respectively. Along with other games such as Elder Scrolls Skyrim, Grand Theft Auto, and Assassin's Creed as comparable examples.
