N64 Rainbow Road: Mario Kart 64 vs. F-Zero X
Just a video I find interesting to make, to show comparisons of the infamously long Rainbow Road of Mario Kart 64, against its often forgotten reuse in F-Zero X, ironically the second games of their respective series, both played in original Nintendo 64 cartridges.
What I find really fascinating about this Rainbow Road isn't just about its miles long length that made it the longest Rainbow Road (and MK course) since to this day or its unmistakable shape, but the very fact Nintendo 𝘥𝘪𝘥 put this exact course in F-Zero. And, guess what, it's actually 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁 for the still-dormat futuristic racing series.
In the original source, we all know that in Mario Kart 64, its Rainbow Road is so long it takes about 6 minutes to do 3 laps in 150cc go-karts, forcing its much later return in Mario Kart 8 to be completely remade differently from the original track and do only a single lap. But F-Zero X kept the old course - though altered it to fits its universe and unfortunately, due the clear graphics struggle of that game, the whole track isn't rainbow-colored. However, in the far faster F-Zero racers easily capable of supersonic speeds, the Nintendo 64 Rainbow Road's proportions are nothing more than any other F-Zero track! It's crazy to see this particular Rainbow Road in a game it doesn't technically belong to, but fits so well for it, because its sheer length is suitable to handle the much greater speeds required for F-Zero.
In the Mario Kart 64 race, I tried to do the shortcut trick again, but things didn't go as planned. In F-Zero X, you certainly can't do the same move even if done right as the programming is completely different. Coincidentally, both are at their last Cups, but F-Zero X for some reason put this first instead of last.
Mario Kart 64 (original source): 00:00-07:47
F-Zero X: 7:48-11:26
According to MK64, Rainbow Road is 2000 meters long, which is 1.24 miles. But according to F-Zero, their courses are over 𝟲 miles every single lap (meaning it has to be at least an 18+ mile long race in the original), so who knows about this course's true length. I don't know the exact reason why Nintendo put this Rainbow Road in F-Zero X, but my guess, knowing both series very well, is to prove a point how many times faster F-Zero is compared to Mario Kart and the track itself happens to be the right choice to show it.
