46Iran is viewed by the West, and America in particular, mainly as 'the country of evil', but how does Iran view the rest of the world? Do we ever take the time to ponder how do Iranians look at the world, and why? Labelling Iran as an evil country forms the spear-point of President Bush's ideological battle and is held responsible by the West for the chaos in the region. VPRO backlight investigates in Iran itself how this "enemy stereotype" influences the public life. Visits to schools, mosques and government institutions show how Iran is preparing itself for a response to possible aggressions from abroad. But there is, in Iran, also a wish for dialogue with the West and a tentative search for a solution to the conflict. Yet, this vulnerable opposition will immediately cease to exist if the country is attacked. Military action from the side of Israel or the United States will result in instant unity amongst the Iranians. Fundamentalist and reformist, everyone will then rally behind the nation. This will strengthen the position of the Islamic fundamentalists in Iran and take away all prospects of a reformist movement.
