47When other European countries usually experience an exciting election struggle, Angela Merkel in Germany in the autumn of 2017 is likely to start her fourth term as Bundeskanzlerin. The economic armed forces also develop with Merkel as a moral leader of the free west. What does this mean for Germany of the future? Backlight goes on tour with the famous German comedian Jan Böhmermann.
Jan Böhmermann (36) has a peculiar view of current Germany. How can a country that began two world wars now be lost to the leader of the free west? Germany seems embarassed with that new role and looks for its identity.
Böhmermann uses no filter: he speaks his mind. This became very clear when he became internationally renowned for his sarcastic poem about the Turkish President Erdogan. It was a satirically targeted text about the limits of freedom of expression, which resulted in a diplomatic uproar between Germany and Turkey. Böhmermann had to appear before the judge and some lines from his poem were forbidden. Due to many threats, he temporarily had to keep a low profile and to receive police protection. Still, he fearlessly caught up with his television show not much later.
Few people are more suitable to look at the German superpower than Jan Böhmermann. With his own perspective, he can, as no other, reflect on current and political developments in his country, always critical and with much irony. Böhmermann made in response to Lubach's popular 'The Netherlands welcomes Trump in his own words' video for his weekly TV show 'Das Neo Magazin Royale' the unbeatable 'Germany second' version, which then received many international variants.
Challenging, with humor and always looking beyond the boundaries, it's about time for a Sunday with Böhmermann.
