A Nintendo Console NOT MADE BY NINTENDO? Sharp Famicom TWIN IS AWESOME
Over the years, I've been very lucky and blessed to add some amazing items to my gaming collection. Now, one thing for me is that I don't consider myself a collector as much as someone who loves playing games. For example, I'll never have a complete set of anything, I just buy things I want to play. Well, one of the things I first did when I got into creating content for YouTube was to get into collecting for the Famicom. That led me to a channel called @FamicomDojo and a series on the Japanese Nintendo Systems. See, I knew about the Famicom, but what I didn't know about was that there were Nintendo Consoles NOT made by Nintendo Themselves! And not only that, but they were awesome.
One of my first import purchases, after a Super Famicom (my 1st) and an original Famicom was the Sharp Famicom Turbo Twin, or Twin Turbo. I've seen it called both. Anyways, what intrigued me about this system was the fact that it had both the Famicom and Famicom Disk System in one unit, which is killer. I also loved the fact that it had built-in AV ports, so connecting to a USA TV didn't require a CRT tuned to channel 95, even better. It also had controllers with super long cords which I loved too. But the special thing was, as the name implies, the Turbo Twin has TURBO FIRE built right into the controllers!
During this era, having turbo was often a selling point for 3rd party aftermarket turbo. I can't remember what the name of the Acclaim wireless controller was but it had turbo, but it stunk. You had the NES Max, which I loved but others didn't. Then there was the NES Advantage which was great, but expensive. Well in Japan, Sharp partnered with Nintendo to release the Turbo Twin, the Famicom Twin (same thing without turbo) and even in the US the NES Sharp TV! They had a great partnership, and the quality of the console is terrific. While the SNES has my favorite library, the Sharp Turbo Twin may be my favorite console in my collection.
Did you know there was such a thing? Did you know Sharp made officially licensed Nintendo Hardware?
