Mario 64 with RUMBLE?!? - Buy The Shindou Pak Japanese Version!!
86As long as I can remember, I have always loved the Japanese video game market. The games look great, the box art and cartridge labels are often better than what we got here in the USA, and sometimes you get extra features in them compared to what the USA received. One such example is the Shindou Pak Taiou Mario 64 cartridge.
The biggest difference in this version of Mario 64 compared to previous releases is the inclusion of compatibility with Nintendo's Rumble Pak. When the N64 launched, the Rumble Pak wasn't a thing, so there was no need to include rumble functionality in the games. With the release of Star Fox 64, however, rumble would change what and how we play. While there are other minor game changes and bug fixes, the biggest change was the addition of Rumble Pak functionality.
While we did not get this version here in the USA, this was released in Japan. But you can't play the Japanese Games on a US N64, can you?

What Nintendo used to region locking is pretty simple since it is 100% hardware-based. Depending on the region, the N64's cartridges and cartridge trays have different indentations to denote the location. US games have the tabs all the way to the outside of the back of the cart, while the Japanese games are inset a little. Some have taken to purchasing US N64 cartridge backs and getting around the tabs that way. Others simply cut these tabs out of their system.
