Boat Safety Equipment Checklist - Don't Forget Life Vests!
4Ryan McVinney with Boat Trader and Captain Jeff Lagrew with America's Boating Club review a basic boat safety equipment checklist for new boaters and discuss what to bring aboard before you invite everyone down for a day boating on the water with you at the helm. As the captain of a boat, every passenger's safety becomes your responsibility. Not having the proper safety equipment onboard your boat can not only be dangerous, but it may be illegal as well. Required USCG boating safety equipment includes life jackets for everyone onboard (or "personal flotation devices" aka PFDs), a fire extinguisher, a sound producing device (such as an airhorn), at least 3 visual distress signals (flares) and a throwable flotation device. You should also have a first aid kit, a VHF radio, an anchor (or two) with sufficient rode line for the water depths, oars, sun protection and a bailing bucket, at minimum. Boaters should visit the USCG boating safety website for the most up-to-date safety equipment requirements for different size vessels.
