How to Kite Fish: Illustrated Basic Sport Fishing Techniques
8Boat Trader illustrates how to kite fish by deploying live baits for predator game fish. This illustrated video shows the common basic sport fishing technique and the proper way to rig a kite fishing system. The procedure involves rigging a lightweight kite to hang over the surface of the water behind the boat attached to a kite reel (generally heavy duty electric motorized kite reels are used) from which a drop line will hang. One end of the line is attached to a fishing rod while the other is attached to the bait fish, suspended just below the waterline.
Each line usually has up to 3 release clips, and multiple lines can be set out to fight multiple sportfish at the same time. This is a very effective way to catch big game fish such as sailfish wahoo, yellowfin and more. The fish bobbing at the waterline is an irresistible snack for larger fish. Corks and weights are used to control and present the fish. Many anglers prefer kite fishing outfits to outriggers because it presents the bait better to the fish. Usually charter fishing captains will fly multiple kites, 1-2 on off the aft starboard and 1-2 off port (left and right). Once the kite drops this signals to the anglers that the bait has been taken by a fish and the fight is on.
