Final Fantasy VII Remake: Intermission DLC

Your opinion of this DLC probably hinges on your opinion of Yuffie, an optional-ish character from the original version. I never thought she was an especially interesting character largely based on her portrayal. In the original, she is immature and grating and her storyline never seemed that interesting. She’s portrayed about the same here: A kid with a real chip on her shoulder and some major bouts of immaturity.
The ninja from Wutai gets her own sidequest that runs parallel with the action in the main quest as she and her fellow associate, Sonon, work with Avalanche to break into Shinra HQ to get their hands on powerful materia to strike a blow against the evil corporation. Of course, it’s never quite that simple.
The game itself is bifurcated into two sections: Getting the equipment necessary to break into Shinra and then facing off against Shinra’s flunkies, particularly Scarlet, the head of their weapons department. The pacing is pretty good throughout and there are some very good setpieces (the chase along the pillar being a standout) that make good use of Yuffie’s ninja skills. Sonon is an interesting character whose story could have used a little more work with motivation. The plot itself doesn’t really seem to go anywhere by the end and it’s more about marking time than anything compelling.
There are some good things, to be sure, and the epilogue is intriguing. It raises more questions than answers, but on the whole, it’s not as compelling as it could have been. That’s unfortunately the case for most DLCs and Yuffie, while a logical choice to lead this story, is not the best-suited character for it. At least it’s short enough to where it doesn’t overstay its welcome.
