This shouldn't have worked. Final Fantasy VII is one of the most venerated games of all-time and is arguably the most well-known game in the series (though not the best). Making the game feel more modern is fine and all, but was that all they were going to do? What more could they do? Could it even work? Somehow, the gang at Square Enix did it.

That's thanks in large part to them not tampering too much with the source material. The basic structure of the first six hours of disc 1 have been given the full treatment and expanded in some ways to create a vibrant, exciting and even surprising cinematic experience. Many of the sequences from that section still exist (including a few potentially controversial ones), but they are expanded and given room to breathe. For the most part, they don’t feel overlong or overstay their welcome. The original Final Fantasy VII does cram in a lot of events, but it all works. So does this game, which is more leisurely paced. There are moments where the game does seem to be straining and padding scenes for longer than they should.

While a remake, the game does have some original scenes that are not in the original. Two of the most notable are a sequence that links between the first two Mako Reactor missions and another mission after the incident in Sector 7. The first section is a mixed bag and is designed to expand the characters of Wedge, Biggs and Jessie, but it runs much longer than it should. The second section is more interesting and delves into Shinra’s machinations and experiments.

The voice-acting is first-rate, which helps in sucking you into this world, which is brimming with life and depth. There are many side quests peppered throughout the game; some are filler, and some are quite good. The combat system works very well and there is some mild strategy involved. Using different characters and different forms of Materia for certain bosses will really give you a workout. The game stretches itself too thin in spots and not all of the new material works, but it's still a staggering accomplishment and better than anything else Square Enix has delivered in this century.
