2010, Wii; PS3/X360, 2011. Rating: 3 out of 4 stars

Trying to remake an iconic game like Goldeneye 007 for the N64 comes with its share of risks. The good news is in remaking the game, there were some things an updated version could do the original could not such as voice acting and cleaner visuals/framerate. The original’s simplicity was part of its charm and piggybacking off a successful movie didn’t hurt, either. The remake’s goal of updating the story to the 2010’s with Daniel Craig as Bond and fitting the game more to his style rather than Brosnan’s is a good choice. The game is a little harder-edged and more visceral, but it stays generally true to the original story beats. Some character motivations have changed, but in general, it is a natural fit.

The game itself is well-designed and structured to allow for a mix of stealth and action gameplay, offering the player the choice of going in guns blazing or trying a more nuanced approach. There are times when one is better than the other and the multi-faceted level design opens up the ability to explore, which is a nice touch. The tank mission is pretty boring and is only there because it was in the movie and the QTE events toward the end are lame, but that’s true for any of these first-person shooters. The presentation is first-rate and the game gets a boost having Craig, Judi Dench and Rory Kinnear reprising their roles from the film series. They add a nice bit of credibility to the proceedings since they have most of the dialogue. The other voice actors are middling to average. Trevelyan, in particular, is a disappointment. No luck bringing back Sean Bean?

Bond games have varied in quality over the years, but developer Eurocom has a decent pedigree with the underrated The World is not Enough for the N64. This is another solid adaptation that manages to have its own voice while recognizing it will always be in the original’s influential shadow.
