After an off-center (but still compelling) tangent with Zelda II, A Link to the Past goes back to the original model and amplifies it tenfold to create a lush, exciting game that set the modern template for the franchise in so many ways. From character names to items to places to the basic rubric, this game is the gold standard for the franchise and remains so to this day thanks to its masterful game design and gameplay.

In terms of their approach, Nintendo didn’t change too much from the original in terms of surprises and tricks, but they were able to take advantage of the Super Nintendo hardware to create something more involving and dramatic with their level design and flesh out an entire world rather than the barren wasteland of the original.

The dungeons are richer and more diverse in their design with the gamer being encouraged to explore every inch of the dungeons. They often take advantage of their surroundings and create environments that are unique and stand apart from one another. The bosses, also, require the gamer to not only utilize different weapons, but each requires a different strategy, which is a welcome sight. They also did a brilliant job meshing the light world and the dark world to make them mirror images of one another and make it an integral part of finding every secret the game has to offer.

There are no duds with any of the dungeons and the multi-faceted and layered nature of the game design allows and encourages exploring every single nook and cranny in this deep world of Hyrule. Just about every game that has preceded A Link to the Past still toils in its shadow and it remains the finest single game on the SNES.
