Nothing in life or programming is actually free:

You thought the nightmare was over and you were finally free? Think again!

Welcome instead to "Free Programming"... um... okay, I get what you're going for, but it's a little misleading in and of itself. For the purposes of the demo, it's where your finished game will live and can be accessed and played around with. What you're actually free to do for actual free freeness isn't especially free.

It will essentially serve as the My Games list. Wherein you have a game. One game you made. By following the directions. The Game Builder Garage demo software will save and remember it, but you will not be allowed to make any changes to any of its particulars, not even the ones you were managing within the lessons themselves. Because...

Well, that's all! See you in the next lesson! ...or so Bob says. The demo is actually over now. Now, let's present you with an advertisement video within the game itself!

As stated prior to the veil being lifted and this whole "demo" thing being exposed for the charade it truly is... there's not a whole lot else you can do. Shocking, yes, I know.

...but at least you can still... um... play... your game!

---

I know, it's easy to sell this little thing short based on all the factors at work here... but... um... it's actually kinda... fun? At least if you have someone else controlling the second character. Which I just happened to have. (I know, I was shocked anyone was interested in giving it a go myself!)

It's... actually a lot more engaging than it seems. It's not the deepest or most thoughtful game, but it IS a game. And that's what this is all about. Games. Liking them. Making them. Liking the games you make. Sharing them with others. Like... personally. Those who can see them because they're on your screen. Anything else will require a retail copy and an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription!

I will point out that there are some slight gameplay imbalances... no, not just the inherent imbalance created by the players not being particularly equal in their goals and capacities to fulfill them.

For instance, the runner can't actually escape by walking off the lower end of the red and blue angled platforms, because the tagger will fall on top of them before they can escape under it. That kind of thing.

I think it goes without saying that it could possibly use some tweaking to be a better game... tweaking that we can't actually do to it as-is anymore, mind you! But you'll find that most games have a certain amount of room for improvement, and that doesn't stop there from being an entire industry dedicated to their production, sale, and consumption.

While we're making pie in the sky dreams for ourselves, it'd also be nice to have some longer-term goal or scorekeeping... but there's some definite purity in the concept of just sitting down and playing a thing without any set dressing or expectations or implied elements that we take for granted in games we play and presumably pay money to do so.

It's the cases that go above and beyond this that create a truly engaging interaction with their users and become the ones that we come back to time and again and wish to spend untold hours engrossed in.

No, that's TOTALLY not a high bar for people just messing around with stuff like this.

---

And now the demo's truly and totally run its course. Probably. I SWEAR! Would I mislead you at all on this?! The first Monster Hunter Stories game demo actually ended and was very clear about the fact that there was nothing left to do, and I respected that! (I even failed to go back for that last subquest!)

Yep. Nothing left undone or unsaid or unexplained. Especially explained. That'd be a real shame.

It's clearly out of my hands.

Don't worry, you're safe now!

... ... ...

(You should probably start worrying, though.)
