"Lunar Pool" for the NES is a unique take on the classic game of pool, set in a futuristic space-themed environment. Developed by Compile and released in 1985, it offers a unique twist on the traditional pool game by transporting players to the moon. The game has 60 levels in total, with a two-player mode where control alternates between players upon missed shots.

Players choose their starting stage (with completion of all stages unlocking the ending) and adjust the table's friction. No friction means balls roll endlessly until they pocket or scratch, while maximum friction locks them in place like they're fused to the table. Each round presents a new table shape and ball arrangement. Players begin with three spare cue balls (extra lives), losing one for pocketing the cue ball or missing three shots in a row. Completing a round earns a bonus ball, with two awarded for flawless performance. Losing all cue balls spells game over. The game features a total of 60 different pool tables, each with its own distinctive layout and challenges.

Players use the cue ball to sink all the other balls on the table. To make shots, players simply set the angle with a cursor and gauge the power meter accurately to control the cue ball's speed. Surprisingly, there's no cue stick in sight. The objective is to sink all balls to progress, with sinking the cue ball or failing to sink a ball within three turns resulting in game over.

Initially straightforward, the game's complexity increases with barriers and bumpers hindering progress. With 60 levels, some prove particularly challenging. While there's also a CPU option, it's notable for its unfair advantage. Graphics are modest yet colorful, clear and sharp. Lunar Pool proves an enjoyable pool game, with mechanics that are simple to grasp. The inclusion of the friction option adds depth, catering to both newcomers and seasoned players.
