1986, NES. Rating: 4 out of 4 stars

What’s amazing about the original foray into the land of Hyrule is how so many of the elements, enemies and concepts were established in the first game of the series. The original is fairly barebones with a Hyrule that is more like a desolate wasteland as Link tries to find the eight pieces of the Triforce of Courage to try and stop Ganon, who has abducted Princess Zelda. All pretty straightforward in terms of narrative, which is hardly the point of the original. It’s all about exploration, and that’s where The Legend of Zelda shines. This is a game that rewards out of the box thinking and looking for secrets and finding hidden items and tools that can make the game easier.

And make no mistake: The Legend of Zelda, particularly in the second half, is not an easy game. Bad strategy and play will not be rewarded. Patience and awareness will be. The gameplay is fairly rudimentary by any regular standard, but it works very well. The same can be said for the graphics and the sound, which aren’t anything special, but they do their job very well and it meshes excellently with the environment.

What makes The Legend of Zelda a masterpiece is the game design. The game is overflowing with secrets and the gamer is encouraged every last square inch of this game. There are many surprises and rewards for the gamer, and that’s all in the first quest. The second quest, which manages to avoid being a kaizo version of the original, has its own wealth of secrets and it is a rewarding experience for the gamer. The Legend of Zelda is a masterpiece and set the bar and the template for the greatest gaming franchise of all-time.
