30-Second Review: Garden Story
A 30-second review of Garden Story, by Rose City Games, for the Nintendo Switch!
Take control of Concord, a wee little grape, in this RPG to save the Grove, a tree (stump) community being decimated by rot.
A charming, colorful world that drew people in during the most recent Indie World event, but the game suffers from several mechanical issues which makes it not at all fun to play.
Slow movement, small attacks, a lack of variety in combat, clunky health, fishing...the list goes on. Plus, the game seems to "chug," it should be a much smoother experience in all honesty.
The first boss is a HUGE challenge, but after that they are all so much easier. Once you get a couple jars, health preservation is easy. Dialogs are mind-numbingly long.
Wanna farm? You have to choose a jug to wet the area (make sure you're standing close enough), switch to your shovel to dig a whole, switch to the seed bag and choose the seed and then use the shovel to bury it. THAT'S ONE. Farming should be something you do a lot of, but it's something you avoid. Why not make it a one button mechanic?
Garden Story is a GREAT effort by its indie developer, seriously, but it goes to show you how a small hiccup in mechanics can turn a fun game into a bore. Garden Story gets a 5.5 out of 10.
