An Indie Isometric RTS Kingdoms with a Melee Monarch!? Yep! – Thronefall Demo –
Thronefall is an Indie, Isometric, Tower Defense RTS, a sort of top down Kingdom like, light strategy game that feels very approachable, and not absent depth.
Thronefall should do very well on the Steam Deck and the Switch.
Thronefall feels like a top down Kingdoms, except your king can attack; good, as the idea of a cowardly fantasy king never sat well with me; a bit too close to reality I suppose.
Like Kingdom and its many different versions, you ride around, choosing what to build, and preparing defenses for the coming night.
Unlike in Kingdom, in Thronefall you trigger the night, removing the sense of being rushed; after all, what knight would DARE trigger Da King?!
Meta Progression:
Meta Progression is present in the form of your character lvl, as after each stage, you gain exp, and unlock huge meta progression power up perks, like getting free gold from the castle, or the towers becoming much stronger, as well as different weapons to equip upon your king.
This Meta Progression system is kept from unbalancing the game by limiting the amount of perks that can be equipped before each stage, letting the player pick and choose their loadout prior to each run.
Built in Difficulty Options:
There are also “mutators” you can select, which strengthen the enemy or make the map tougher, but grant extra exp on completion, so there is a sort of difficulty mode build in as well, encouraging players to give the map another go at a higher challenge lvl; a nice option for those so inclined.
Note: This is an early look at the demo for Thronefall so any bugs or other oddness is not representative of the final product.
Still, Thronefall is an approachable and fun light strategy RTS that offers more depth and challenge than would initially appear, and is easily worth a wishlist and a watch.
