Castle of Illusion (2013) - Playthrough & 100%ish
3Well, after my big produced video re-debut I had a family trip to Disney World. Usually before I go I try to stream something Disney, which has become a whole playlist and has seen me play through Sega's 8-bit and 16-bit Disney titles like the Illusion series. So to put a cap on that, here is 2013's Australian made remake of Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse. This was handled by Sega Studios of Australia and was released on PC, PS3, XB360, IOS, Android, and even Windows Phone... it sure was 2013.
Not just a fresh coat of paint, 2013 Castle of Illusion features voiced cutscenes, completely remade stages, 3D control segments, and some new areas including a prologue stage and a stage leading up to the final boss. Instead of a 1:1, this game captures more of the ideas and set pieces from the original games and does something fresh with them, while still adding their own unique level segments? Does it work? Yeah, I think its alright. Controls are a bit floaty and slippery but design wise the game is solid.
One wrinkle is the addition of collectables now scattered among the stages and overworld (oh also there is an overworld now). Collecting diamonds open the path forward and also unlocks concept art, while statue pieces are hidden in stages and add statues to the castle overworld. In addition there's 2 special collectables in the form of playing cards and chili peppers that unlock additional costumes based on other Sega & Disney collab games. Soundtrack is by Grant Kirkhope bring the most Kirkhope arrangements of the OST though you can play with the original music if you'd like.
