Is THIS Genesis Clone Compatible With Master System Adapters?
73Hyperkin may sometimes get a bad rap for some of their systems, but the Mega Retron HD is one of the finest budgets friendly Sega Genesis clones on the market. It has pretty good color and sound, not great but good, and it's one of the rare budget friendly systems that actually plays Virtua Racing. That got me wondering whether or not it would possibly play games off of the Power Base Mini FM. Let's check it out.
For those of you who do not know what the Power Base Mini FM is, it is an adapter that allows you to play Sega Master System games on your Sega Genesis. it essentially replicates what the Power Base Converter was, which was an OEM Sega accessory for the Genesis. Where the original Power Base allowed you to play both Sega Master System games and Sega card games, the Power Base Minii FM only allows you to play the cartridges. I've used it to great success on my Model 1 and Model 2 Sega Genesis, and it also works beautifully on my JVC X'EYE.
I have tested the power Base mini with other systems, and never had any success. I was hopeful that the Mega Retron HD would be different because it's actually compatible with the Sega Genesis game Virtua Racing. That uses a very specialized chip in the cartridge that no other budget friendly Sega Genesis clone system works with. Would the Mega Retron HD be any different?
In a word, no. I was disappointed to see absolutely nothing pop up on my screen once I plugged in a game and turned on the power. I have to admit I was surprised that I didn't get anything, not a buzz, not a flash, not a flicker. That was extremely surprising to me, and I have to admit a bit disappointing.
While the Power Base Mini FM did not work on the Mega Retron HD it is still my preferred way to play Master System games. I have a Sega Master System but it has some graphical issues including RF noise and jail bars. If you want to pick up a Power Base Mini FM for your system, you can get them through Castlemania Games.
